FIELD NOTE / OCTOBER 2026

A cue, not a wall of text.

What building interpreting support taught me to pay attention to.

In simultaneous interpreting, a person is listening, remembering and speaking at nearly the same time. A support system has to fit into that activity. Putting more information on a screen creates another demand on the person’s attention.

For Echoo, I developed real-time subtitles and trigger-based highlighting, alongside services for audio, bilingual transcription, terminology and meeting records. My contribution to the related study was the software that supported it.

The associated study reported better interpreting accuracy and lower perceived cognitive load, with trigger-specific gains concentrated in proper nouns and terms. I am its fourth author; the paper is awaiting editorial production.

The question I take from this work is how to make assistance fit the task. In creative tools, the timing of a question or suggestion may matter as much as its content. That is a connection I want to investigate, rather than assume transfers unchanged from interpreting to design.
